As Equestrians we all know the risks that come with handling, riding and caring for horses, but the rewards of having them in our lives usually makes us gladly accept that. A lot of us were drawn to horses early on in life when we were at our bravest and most curious. All we wanted was to be around these beautiful animals and learn how to do all the things we dreamt of. Movies like National Velvet, The Black Stallion, Flicker or Hildago, inspired our independence and grew the enigma that soon hooked itself into our lives permanently. But even if horses didn't draw you in until much later in life, the excitement of the experience and the longing to connect with them is the very same. While every equestrian's journey is unique, we all encounter those risks we so readily accepted at some point in time. A fall, a bolt, buck or rear, a bite, kick or some sort of other unpredictable accident, often leaves different forms of trauma behind. Over the years as we encounter more unpredictable incidents; no matter how small or large, the trauma piles up and suddenly fear and anxiety shake our confidence. Where once we felt nothing but exhilaration and excitement, we now experience worry and doubt. Even worse, our horses sense it and suddenly our relationships with them are affected, as they are highly intuitive animals that mirror our energy and respond to our anxiety and tension with their own. Listening to trainers and instructors we know the importance to relax our muscles, be calm and confident in our body language on the ground and mounted alike. But our bodies often betray our mind, leaving us cramped up, tight and nervous, with sweaty palms and shaky breathing. You tell yourself everything is fine but you don't believe it in your core. Frustration and disappointment sets in and brings along doubt about continuing your equestrian journey. Almost worse, you feel embarrassed and judged by others around you.
